Luftpalme

Palm trees have been heavily exoticised and orientalised ever since they were made to travel to Europe. You can see them abstractly patterned on the Ishtar Gate in the Pergamon Museum. To carry dates, they need a special soil and climate and good care.

Air plants don’t need soil, they get the majority of their nutrients from the air and don’t take energy from a host or co-existing plant.

Air palm trees for me symbolically recognize the post migrant position, acknowledging the common space and overcoming the idea of giving space.
